Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 14, 2026
Dirtly is a hyperlocal map for people who have dirt to give away or sell, and people who need it. This page explains what we collect, why, and how it's kept private. We've tried to write it the way we'd actually explain it to a neighbor, not the way a legal team would.
The short version
- We collect what we need to run the map and let you message people: your email, a display name, an optional photo, an optional contact detail, and the location of any pin you drop.
- Your exact pin location is never shown publicly — only an approximate location, fuzzed by about 100 meters.
- Your email and any contact info you add are never shown to anyone. They only leave your profile if you choose to share them, inside a conversation with someone you're already talking to.
- We don't sell your data. We don't run ads. We don't share your information with anyone outside of running Dirtly itself.
- Dirtly is free for individuals, and always will be.
What we collect
When you create an account:
- Email address (used for login and account recovery — never shown publicly)
- Display name (shown on your pins and messages)
- Profile photo, if you choose to add one (shown the same way)
- Contact info, if you choose to add one — phone number, or however you'd like to be reached (never shown publicly; see below)
When you post a listing:
- The type of listing (have dirt / want dirt), soil type, rough amount, price, and description you write
- The location you drop a pin at. We store the exact location, but only ever display a fuzzed version (~100 meters off) on the public map. Your exact location is private to you unless you choose to share it.
When you message someone:
- The messages themselves, visible only to you and the person you're talking to.
Automatically:
- Basic technical information needed to run the app securely (things like login sessions). We don't use tracking pixels, ad trackers, or sell behavioral data to third parties.
Who can see what
| Information | Who sees it |
|---|---|
| Display name, photo | Anyone browsing the map |
| Listing details (type, soil, amount, price, description) | Anyone browsing the map |
| Approximate (fuzzed) pin location | Anyone browsing the map |
| Exact pin location | Only you, unless you share it in a message |
| Email address | Only you — never shown to anyone else |
| Contact info you add to your profile | Only you, unless you choose to share it in a message |
| Messages | Only you and the other person in that conversation |
Why we fuzz your location
Pins on Dirtly often sit close to where people actually live. We shift the public location of every pin by roughly 100 meters in a random direction so a listing points people to the right neighborhood without pointing them at your front door. If you want to share your exact address with someone you're arranging a pickup with, you can do that yourself inside your conversation with them, whenever you're ready.
Sharing your contact info
Your phone number or other contact details, if you add them, stay private by default. The only way they're shared is if you tap "share my contact info" inside a specific conversation — at that point, the person you're talking to sees it. It's never visible on your public profile or listings.
Who we share data with
We use a small number of service providers to run Dirtly, and they only ever see what's necessary to do their job:
- Supabase — hosts our database, handles login, and stores photos you upload.
- Google Maps — powers the map itself. Google's own privacy policy applies to how they handle map requests.
We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with advertisers, data brokers, or anyone else, for any reason.
Your choices
- You can edit or remove your display name, photo, and contact info in your profile at any time.
- You can close or delete any listing you've posted at any time.
- You can request that your account and associated data be deleted by contacting us at [CONTACT EMAIL]. We'll remove your personal information from our systems, other than what we're required to retain for legitimate purposes (like fraud prevention).
Children's privacy
Dirtly isn't intended for use by anyone under 18.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we'll update the date at the top and, if the change is significant, let users know inside the app.
